Waupun city officials are scrambling after hearing news that a longtime Waupun industry is closing. Waupun mayor Julie Nickel tells WFDL news she has been told that Silgan Containers in Waupun is closing. Nickel says she has not received formal confirmation from Silgan corporate officials, but says she was told Silgan informed employees Monday the Waupun facility would close this fall. Nickel says the plant has been in Waupun since the 1940s and employs 60 people. The plant manufactures large metal cans for food products. Silgan’s website says the company is the largest provider of metal food packaging in the United States.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
