A new look at data from Minnesota and Wisconsin found that teens and adults 15 to 34 years old are most likely to visit the emergency room for heat-related illness. Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says the finding is surprising because the majority of public health alerts during heat waves focus on the elderly and very young. “Definately surprised. I mean we talk about heat-related events when we have hot weather to try to get people to take those best practice steps eliminate themselves from heat stroke and heat exhaustion and we are always concentrating on the very young and very old,” Mueller told WFDL news. The study highlights that teens and younger adults, particularly those involved in athletics or working outdoors also need to take steps to prevent heat-related illnesses. Mueller says its important for everyone to take steps to stay safe during extreme heat. Stay in air conditioning, drink plenty of water. If you have to be outside, stick to the cooler morning and evening hours. Wednesday is Heat Awareness Day in Wisconsin.
