The Campbellsport police chief says a Social Security phone scam this week had a new twist. The caller claimed he was with the Campbellsport Police Department. Police Chief Tom Dornbrook says a Campbellsport resident says he received a call from someone initially claiming to be with Social Security who told the victim his Social security number had been hacked, and the hackers were using the money to buy vehicles to sell drugs. The scammer asked for the man’s social security number and other financial information. Dornbrook says the man became suspicious and said he was going to the police department. The scammer hung up, but called back a few minutes later with the Campbellsport Police Department phone number showing up on the victim’s caller ID. This time the caller stated he was with Campbellsport police and even stated the names of a couple officers who work for the department. Dornbrook says when the victim handed his cell phone to police department staff, the scammer argued with them. Dornbrook says for whatever reason the red flags are there but sometimes people don’t see them, especially when there are the threats of arrest warrants or complaints filed against them.
