Authorities say six people miraculously received mostly minor injuries following a chain-reaction crash involving a semi and five other vehicles on Interstate 41 in Fond du Lac County. Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Sergeant Ryan Zitlow told WFDL news the crash happened on southbound 41 near Townline Road shortly before 4:30pm Saturday. Zitlow says the crash happened when traffic slowed and was moving to the passing lane to go around a traffic stop on the west shoulder of the Interstate. Zitlow says a preliminary investigation shows the semi driver tried to merge into the passing lane, but failed to react to the slower traffic and rear ended the vehicle in front of him, starting a chain reaction series of crashes involving four other vehicles. Zitlow says the semi became entangled in the guardwire in the median. Zitlow says its fortunate that nobody was killed. “I’m very surprised by that due to the severity of the damage on the vehicles,” Zitlow told WFDL news. “We had two vehicles that overturned, minor injuries in the one, and the other one they were transported but non life-threatening on those injuries.” Zitlow says one of the vehicles involved avoided the collisions and ran off the roadway with no damage. The accident remains under investigation. All lanes of traffic were reopened about two hours after the crash.
