Students are heading back to school this week full of anticipation and the excitement of a new school year, eager to reunite with friends they haven’t seen since last school year. But it’s a different story in the Oakfield School District where students are returning to class with heavy hearts after learning of the sudden, unexpected death of a classmate. Fifteen year old Brianna Totz died from an apparent asthma attack after playing a volleyball game last month. She would have been a sophomore this year at Oakfield High School. Superintendent Dr. Vance Dalzin says the volleyball team cancelled games that were scheduled last week and the football team dedicated its first game to Brianna, wearing purple shoelaces in her honor. Purple was Brianna’s favorite color. Dalzin says counselors will be available for students as they return to school this week. Dalzin says its important for students and staff to talk about how they are feeling. He says everyone reacts to a death differently. A GoFundMe page has been established to raise money for the Totz family. So far more than $8,000 has been raised.
