9-4-19 fdl county dairy extension agent says local dairy industry remains strong

todaySeptember 4, 2019

The Fond du Lac County Dairy and Livestock extension agent says the latest bankruptcy statistics show how Wisconsin dairy farmers continue to struggle with depressed milk prices.  The American Farm Bureau Federation says Wisconsin farmers filed 45 Chapter 12 bankruptcies between July 2018 and this June, down five from the previous five month period.  But Wisconsin continues to top the nation in family farm bankruptcies.  Wisconsin also has a lot of farms- the 11th highest total in the nation.  Extension agent Tina Coleman says overall Fond du Lac County’s  dairy industry remains strong.   “We are the second largest milk producing county in the state and about the 25th largest producing county in the country.  So we have a strong infrastructure here in Fond du Lac County,”  Coleman told WFDL news.   “It’s just a matter of how do we help our dairy producers so that they can maintain production for the long haul.”
