The DNR’s large carnivore specialist says this year’s back bear season shows the state’s bear population is healthy.     DNR large carnivore specialist Scott Walter tells WFDL news a  new bear management plan is in place, the bear population remains healthy and is expanding into new areas.   “The black bear population is very healthy in Wisconsin.   Our last population projections suggested right around 24,000 to 25,000 bears statewide,”  Walker told WFDL news.   Walter says hunters harvested more than  3600 bears this year…32 fewer than last year.   He says more than 120,000 hunters applied for either a harvest permit or preference point for the 2019 season.  Walter says this is an exciting time for the black bear program in Wisconsin.
