todayDecember 20, 2019

A Fond du Lac native is competing for a national football championship this weekend and his proud father is inviting the community  to help cheer him on.   Michael Buetow is a 6’1”  290 pound junior lineman at Minnesota State  University in Mankato.  His Mavericks will be taking on West Florida Saturday afternoon in McKinney, Texas  for the Division Two National Football Championship.   In Fond du Lac Buetow helped the Saint Mary’s Springs Ledgers football team win four conference championships and two state titles.   His father Ted Buetow posted on his Facebook page inviting people to his restaurant,  Theo’s 24,  in downtown Fond du Lac Saturday afternoon to watch the game.  “I couldn’t be any prouder.  He’s worked his whole life for football, he loves it,”  Buetow told WFDL news.  Ted Buetow remembers several years ago his son had a championship ring in his hand belonging to another Saint Mary’s Springs football legend, the late Blaine Toshner,  who won a championship at North Dakota State University.   “I came home and my oldest son Michael’s got a ring on.  It was Blaine’s.   I told him he had to give it back.  Long story short he gave it back reluctantly, crying,”  Buetow said.   Buetow says Blaine said it was okay, but Buetow told his son that’s not how it works.  “You have to earn those things and I told him that. You work hard and maybe someday you’ll have an opportunity to win your own ring.”   Michael Buetow has that opportunity this weekend.   Kick off  is 2pm Saturday with coverage on ESPNU.
