Fond du Lac police say a Fond du Lac man was not trying to hurt anyone but made a poor choice to fire a gun to celebrate the New Year. Assistant police chief Aaron Goldstein says the 26 year old man fired more than two dozen gunshots into the air Wednesday morning from his Hamilton Place residence, prompting neighbors to call police. “It was a case of New Years, bad choice, celebratory fire,” Goldstein told WFDL news. “The intention was not to harm anybody but if you think about a community hearing gunshots, not knowing what’s happening, and seeing a police response you can imagine the fear that go in the eyes of people and that’s why we have to deal with that. Somebody’s bad decision to do this created some chaos in that neighborhood for some time.” The police SWAT team was called and after a five hour standoff, the man and two other individuals in the apartment exited peacefully. Goldstein says even though the man didn’t mean any harm, neighbors and officers don’t know that. “Our officers are getting there and they’re hearing the shots and they don’t know if the shots are coming toward them or going toward other people,” Goldstein said. The man faces charges of endangering safety by use of a dangerous weapon. Another man in the apartment was wanted on an outstanding warrant.
