New research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety finds that long-term use of advanced driver assistance technologies can result in more distracted driving. AAA spokeswoman Molly Hart says drivers with experience using systems like adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist were nearly twice as likely to engage in distracted driving while using the systems according to the study. Hart tells WFDL news the new research suggests that as drivers gain more experience using ADAS technology, the could develop complacency while behind the wheel. Hart says alternatively, drivers with less experience and familiarity with the technology were less likely to drive distracted. Researchers theorize that first timers are less inclined to trust the system’s function and reliability, so they remain active and engaged while driving.
