The city of Fond du Lac has received a state grant for new walking trails through McDermott Park. The $50,000 grant through the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship program will be used to build multi-use asphalt trails which will run from the southwest corner on Merrill Avenue, along the tennis courts, splitting into two branches near the center of the park. According to the group, Friends of McDermott Park, one path will take users to the shelter area, playground and restroooms, while the main path will move west toward Deneveu Creek up to Johnson Street. The group says the pathways will make travel through the park more accessible for all, including walkers, those using wheelchairs and strollers, and bikers. Construction on the first phase is expected to be completed by this summer. Other phases will include adding trees, benches, flower beds and “a possible plaza area and other amenities.” The group hopes to raise additional funds with community donations.
