1-20-20 adopt a storm drain

todayJanuary 29, 2020

The Fond du Lac public works director says Fond du Lac residents can do their part  to help prevent water pollution by cleaning debris and obstructions from storm catch basins located along city streets.   To that end the city has launched An Adopt a Storm Drain program.  Public Works director Jordan Skiff says the early and frequent snow last fall and this winter adds up to a poor year for water quality.   “Just because our crews are usually able to get all the leaves off the terraces and out of the gutters before winter sets in and we were scrambling even into December to do that and didn’t get them all done,”  Skiff told WFDL news.  “More of the terraces and gutters will have leaves on them over the winter months, that phosphorous and other nutrients will get into the waterways come spring.”   Skiff says if you would like to participate or obtain additional information about the program you may visit the city’s website-Adopt a Storm Drain Program at fdl.wi,gov.   In addition to clearing leaves from storm drains and gutters, in the winter use less sand and salt, divert stormwater to lawns and gardens, pick up and properly disposes of pet waste, and dispose of litter and garbage found in the street, sidewalks or lawns.
