A Fond du Lac firefighter received a hero’s welcome as he returns home from a tour of duty in Afghanistan. A welcome home ceremony was held Tuesday at the Main Street Fire Station for sergeant Brett Hefty. Hefty recently completed an 18 month military deployment with the Wisconsin Army National Guard and says its great to be home. “I wanted to be deployed for a long time and I’m glad I got to serve and do my part,” Hefty told WFDL news. “…the worst part is being away from family and being away from friends.” Hefty was mobilized on December 1, 2018 and deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel in March of last year. Hefty returned home November 24, and currently serves as a firefighter/paramedic at fire station two on the city’s east side.
