Careless use of smoking materials are being blamed for a fire that destroyed an attached garage and house in Van Dyne. Firefighters from several departments were called to the residence this morning at N9574 High Street in Van Dyne. Waldschmidt says the fire started in the garage and spread to the house. Waldschmidt says a preliminary investigation indicates that a discarded cigarette in the garage started the fire. No one was injured.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
