4-16-20 tornado siren changes for upcoming severe weather season

todayApril 16, 2020

As severe weather season approaches there is a change this year in when the outdoor warning sirens will sound.  The sirens in Fond du lac County will no longer simultaneously sound when there is a tornado warning anywhere in the county.  Instead, sirens will individually sound if the warning is in the direct area of the siren.  The sirens will only be activated for tornado warnings issued by the National Weather Service and only within the area identified in the warning.    This is tornado and severe weather awareness week.  Emergency management director Bobbie Hicken says two years ago on August 28 a tornado outbreak caused millions of dollars in property damage but no injuries because people heeded the warnings and took shelter.   “I want to make sure that everybody is getting back on track as far as being prepared for severe weather,”  Hicken told WFDL news.  “It can come anytime throughout the year but we do see a lot more  of it in the spring and summer months.”    A virtual tornado drill will be held at 1:45pm Thursday.  There will not be any alerts on NOAA weather radios and the outdoor sirens will not sound.  Instead people are encouraged to go over their emergency plans and identify where they would shelter if there was an actual tornado.
