4-17-20 letter from fdl school superintendent

todayApril 17, 2020

Dear Fond du Lac Families and Staff,
Today, Governor Tony Evers issued an update to the “Safer at Home Order” that requires all Wisconsin K-12 public and private schools to remain closed through the remainder of the 2019-20 school year. You can see a copy of the order here.  When we were directed to close our buildings in March, we did not realize that it would be the last time we would see students in person this school year.  Safety is always our top priority yet empty school buildings cause a definite level of sadness for all of us.
This is a challenging time for our community. Structure and routines provide us with a sense of normalcy during an uncertain time. Fortunately, we are able to continue with virtual and remote learning so that while buildings are not accessible, curriculum and teacher/staff support certainly is.
Next steps:

  • Our primary focus continues to be on connecting with our students; providing social, emotional and academic support.
  • Virtual learning expectations for students in 5K-12 have been further articulated and can be viewed here
  • We are committed to providing food service to local children through the remainder of the school year.
  • Referendum construction work will continue on our four Phase 1 schools: Chegwin, Pier, Theisen and Waters.

Future steps:

  • We know there are many questions remaining, such as what will happen with graduation and other end-of-the-year celebrations. Our school leaders are having many conversations about these events and will share information as details come together given this new order from the Governor.
  • We will communicate how your child can acquire any personal items they left in classrooms, lockers and desks.
  • We are actively working on potential summer school opportunities and will communicate when we know more.

I encourage you to maintain contact with your child’s teachers and principal with questions related to instruction, technology or social/emotional wellbeing.
We understand there are tremendous demands on families and that stress levels are high for everyone in our community. Please know that we are committed to doing everything we can to minimize the additional pressures that school responsibilities may place on families so you can prioritize the health and safety of your family.
We will get through this together.
Sincerely,
James R. Sebert, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
