Farmers finally got some good news last week after U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue announced plans for financial help for farmers hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the plan, dairy farmers will receive $2.9 billion of $16 billion in direct payments to various commodities, and the government will buy $3 billion of produce, dairy and meat, including $100 million in dairy products per month, for food assistance programs. Fond du Lac County Dairy and livestock extension agent ,Tina Kohlman, says just like other farmers across the state, some Fond du Lac county farmers have been dumping milk because there are no plants that will take it. “As of April 1 some farms have been asked by their cooperatives or their processors to reduce their milk production dumping milk,” Kohlman told WFDL news. Kohlman says schools, restaurants, institutions and universities have closed to help slow the spread of the virus. That wiped out much of the food service market which makes up for a big chunk of the dairy business. Kohlman says the USDA purchase of dairy goods for food assistance programs will help.
