The Fond du Lac city council has rejected a proposed survey to let the public comment on a proposed Lakeside Park master plan. The plan proposed by a group of business leaders would include an amphitheater, ice rink and parking lot on Oven Island and building a restaurant on the Lighthouse peninsula. The council rejected the idea at their meeting this week. Council president Brian Kolstad says the council also rejected his motion to refer the matter to the Advisory Park Board for their review. “I thought this would be a good opportunity to encourage more engagement with the public,” Kolstad told WFDL news. “…which is one of the reasons we have that board as well.” Meanwhile the council also discussed, but did not take any action, on the possibility of hiring a consultant to help facilitate a public safety referendum to hire additional police officers and firefighters. Kolstad defends council discussion and planning during a recession for a referendum that would raise taxes. “I would say that it would be important to plan ahead. If the actual date of that referendum is next year or the year after this is all vital information we would need.”
