Fond du Lac schools under construction this summer that were in the first phase of projects approved by voters as part of a nearly $100 million dollar building referendum are nearing completion. Interim superintendent Sharon Simon says the first phase includes projects at Chegwin and Waters Elementary Schools and Pier Elementary and Theisen Middle School. Simon says the work is on track to be completed in time for the start of the school year. Bids came in about $129,000 under budget. School officials say the district tried to prioritize the building projects based on safety and security.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
