The Fond du Lac County Sheriff says he hopes to have three new patrol deputies on board sometime after the first of the year. The county board last week approved a COPS hiring grant to fund three patrol deputy positions. Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt says the last time the Sheriff’s Office added a deputy to the force was back in 2001. “We have been applying every year since then and have been declined every year,” Waldschmidt told WFDL news. “The money has gone to other agencies, cities and states around the country.” Waldschmidt says one of the biggest reasons for the extra staff is response time to an increase in cell-phone calls for service. Waldschmidt says one of the deputies will probably be assigned to a digital forensic position. The other positions will be used on patrol.
