5-5-21 wasted covid-19 vaccine

todayMay 4, 2021

State Department of Health Services officials say only a small percentage of COVID-19 vaccine has been wasted in Wisconsin.  Since December, 4500 doses or .10 percent of the state’s vaccines have been wasted.  That’s well below the federal standard of two percent.  Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says so far the Health Department has not had to toss any vaccine.  However, Mueller says it’s going to be increasingly difficult not to waste vaccine moving forward.  Mueller says starting this week the Health Department is providing walk-in vaccinations.   Mueller says while the vaccine may have a shelf life of several months, once the vial is opened it has to be used quickly.
