A retired Ripon College economist says child tax credit money heading to parents will have a very big impact. The U.S. government last week started to deposit the money into the accounts of more than 35 million families. Retired Ripon College economist Paul Schoofs says he doesn’t buy the argument by some Republican lawmakers that the payments will make parents less likely to work.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
