9-8-21 fire safety-college dorms

Sending children off to college for their first year is an exciting time for families.   Numerous conversations are to be had regarding college life, but one converstation that may get overlooked is fire safety.    Every year fire departments across the country fire departments respond to an average  of more than  4,000 on-campus structure fires.  Fond du Lac Fire Chief Pete O’Leary  whether a student is living in a dorm, or in apartments or houses off campus, they need to have a fire escape plan.  The peak months for dorm fires are September and October.  Causes of many dorm and off campus fires include cooking equipment, overloaded power strips, space heaters, candles and smoking materials.
