10-28-21 lead poisoning prevention week

todayOctober 27, 2021

More than three million American households, including 2.1 million low-income households, have children under six years of age who live in homes with lead exposure hazards.  This is National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week.  Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says even relatively low levels of lead exposure can impair a child’s cognitive development.  Mueller says the most common source of exposure for children is lead-based paint, which was used in many homes built before 1978.  The problem is largely preventable with increased testing, education and a focus on prevention.
