A Fond du Lac Family Medicine physician says the initial response locally to getting children vaccinated against COVID-19 has been positive. The FDA and CDC recently approved the vaccine for kids ages 5-11. Dr. Taha El Shahat with SSM Health-FDL Regional Clinic says getting kids vaccinated helps prevent spread of the virus. Dr. El Shahat says while the risk of severe disease in kids remains comparatively small, there have been cases of a rare but serious condition associated with COVID-19, called multisystem inflammatory syndrome. “I’ve seen the end point for severe disease in conditions that we’ve dubbed MIS-C here in the clinic, so it’s not as uncommon as we would like to think,” Dr. El Shahat told WFDL news. Meanwhile, Dr. El Shahat says if you haven’t gotten your flu shot yet, get one.
