Nobody was injured and firefighters prevented a cornstalk fire from spreading to a barn in Fond du Lac County. Shortly before 8:30am Monday firefighters from several area departments responded to Joas Farms Pasture Products on River Road in the town of Oakfield for a report of a large amount of cornstalk bales on fire and the fire was threatening a nearby barn. The fire was contained to the bales of cornstalk. Investigators believe the fire started from a garbage pile that had been burning the previous afternoon. Workers thought that fire was out, but due to high winds overnight, the garbage pile was rekindled and spread to the bales of cornstalk.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
