The Fond du Lac School Board is again discussing whether it’s worth spending taxpayer money to build a new artificial turf football field two years after the board rejected the idea. The school board met in a workshop session to get an update on the cost of placing turf at Fruth Field or building a new artificial turf stadium at the High School. Superintendent Dr. Jeff Fleig says because of the flooding history, Fruth Field would have to be raised four feet. The estimated cost to install turf at Fruth is $2 million. The cost to build a new field at the High School is an estimated $5.5 million. Fleig says with declining enrollment, a projected budget deficit next year, and an estimated $2.5 million in technology needs, the question is can the district afford to build a turf field.
