The outgoing leader of minority Democrats in the state assembly says he always strived to work across the aisle when possible, while holding Republican lawmakers accountable. Gordon Hintz announced last week he would be stepping down as minority leader January 10 to have more time for his family and for his legislative district. Democrats hold 38 of the assembly’s 99 seats, unable to stop Republicans from passing whatever bills they want. “Understand what you can and cannot do. You’re trying to be an effective opposition,” Hintz told WFDL news. “Our strategy is the same for me as an individual, find ways to work together when you can, try to steer things in the direction you want or amend things to make things better, and hold folks making bad making bad decisions accountable.” Hintz says one of the most powerful tools Democrats hav, if they remain united, is blocking Republicans from having the two-thirds majority needed to override a veto.
