With the sturgeon spearing season getting underway this weekend the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office is warning people to check ice conditions before heading out on Lake Winnebago. Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s captain Bill Tadych says the Sheriff’s office will be out on the lake this weekend with an amphibious rescue craft. The warning comes after a Fond du Lac man escaped injury last weekend when his pickup truck broke through thin ice about a half mile north of Frazier Point at Lakeside Park. Tadych says a huge ice crack spans several miles from near Frazier Point north into Winnebago County.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
