Fond du Lac’s premier winter tourism festival is gets underway this weekend. Paired with the annual sturgeon spearing season, Sturgeon Spectacular, returns for its seventh year in Fond du Lac Friday through Sunday. Fond du Lac Festivals executive director Peter Wilke says Sturgeon Spectacular is a perfect way for you and your family to embrace winter and enjoy the outdoors. Wilke says one of the more popular events is the Wisconsin State Snow Sculpting competition. Other events include an outdoor curling tournament on Lake Winnebago, ice sculpting, live entertainment, a sturgeon show-off station and biggest sturgeon contest. Local bars, restaurants, hotels and shops will be offering sturgeon specials.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
