With concerns about unsafe ice conditions in certain areas on Lake Winnebago heading into the sturgeon spearing season there were no major problems reported during the opening weekend. Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s captain Bill Tadych says there were a couple reporrts of vehicles breaking through the ice in our area, but no injuries. Tadych says one vehicle broke through the ice near the shore off Kinker Road, and another vehicle became partially submerged near Wendt’s On the Lake tavern. A week earlier a Fond du Lac man escaped injury when his pickup truck broke through the ice about a half mile north of Frazier Point at Lakeside Park.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
