Longtime Fond du Lac County Executive Allen Buechel has died. Fond du lac County Director of Administration Erin Gerred says Buechel died unexpectedly Sunday afternoon. He was 74 years old. Buechel suffered an apparent heart attack while out to dinner Saturday night and died Sunday afternoon at the hospital. Buechel was re-elected last April to a four year term. He was first elected to the county board in 1976, and first elected county executive in 1992 and re-elected every term since. In 2016 hundreds of well wishers including former congressman Tom Petri and area lawmakers gathered at the city county government center and presented Buechel with a special plaque signed by area legislators congratulating him on 40 years of service.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
