5-10-22 measles vaccinations for kids dip

The portion of U.S. children getting routine vaccinations required for kindergarten dipped slightly during the pandemic.  A government report looked at vaccination rates for the 2020-21 school year.  It shows rates were close to 94-percent for measles, whooping cough  and chicken pox vaccinations.  That was down one percent from a year earlier.   It means  35,000 U.S. children entered kindergarten without evidence of complete vaccination  for extremely contagious diseases.   Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer […]

5-10-22 fdl lighthouse repair project

Work is expected to begin this summer on a major project to repair the Fond du Lac Lakeside Park Lighthouse.  The Lighthouse has been closed since last September when water damage to the inside upright wood members was discovered during routine maintenance.   Public Works director Paul DeVries says an architectural engineer has been hired to develop plans  and specifications for repairs.  Repair work will include replacing the rotted wood studs, and rebuilding […]

Improperly discarded smoking materials are blamed for a porch fire in Fond du Lac.  Shortly before 10:30am Sunday firefighters were called to a house on West Scott Street where residents were trying to extinguish the fire.  A large portion of the front porch was damaged by the flames.   Fire officials say the damage could have been a lot worse if it had not been spotted by a passing motorist.  Nobody was injured. photo: […]

5-9-22 wisconsin wildlife officials issue wildfire warnings across the state

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Wisconsin officials have issued wildfire warnings across the state. The state Department of Natural Resources has listed 52 counties in the “very high risk” category for fires, mostly in northern areas. Eight counties are listed as “high risk” and all other counties are at “moderate risk.” Authorities say high winds, dry conditions and low humidity will make it easier for fire to spread. New guidance from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force says people over the age of 60 should not start taking daily, low-dose aspirin to prevent cardiovascular events like heart attacks or strokes.  Low-dose aspirin had been a popular prevention measure, but as more evidence has accumulated its benefit has come into question.
