Fond du Lac County Board chairman Sam Kaufman was sworn into office Thursday as the third county executive in Fond du Lac County history. Fond du Lac County Clerk Lisa Freiberg administered the oath of office before a packed legislative chambers at the Fond du Lac city-county government center. Kaufman easily won a special election this week to replace longtime county executive Al Buechel who died from a heart attack in March. Kaufman received more than 5400 of the more than 6500 votes cast. Write in candidate Tiffany Brault received 949 votes and write-in candidate Rick Gedemer received just 66 votes. The county board will elect a new board chairperson at their June 21 meeting. They also will eventually appoint a replacement for Kaufman’s District 7 supervisory seat.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
