Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney says while he is disappointed he didn’t win in his race for state attorney general there is nothing he would have done differently in his campaign for the office. Democratic incumbent Josh Kaul narrowly defeated the Republican Toney in last week’s midterm election. “Certainly wasn’t the result we wanted, some disappointment but I’m so grateful to friends, family, supporters, law enforcement across Wisconsin and the DA’s Office in Fond du Lac for all of their support,” Toney told WFDL news in his first interview since the election. Toney says he felt his campaign put up an incredible fight despite being consistently outspent both in the Republican primary and then in the general election. “After visiting all 72 counties I think I could walk into just about any county where somebody would graciously open their home to me. I’m incredibly grateful for that experience.” The race was defined by sharp differences over abortion and attacks over crime and election administration. Toney says he is happy to be the Fond du Lac County DA, but hasn’t completely ruled out another run for statewide office in the future. “I’ve been overwhelmed by people who have reached out that have told me I need to run again in four years. That’s very humbling to have people ask me to do that but I’m focused on being the DA here.” But Toney added: I’ll never say never.”
