todayMarch 1, 2023

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Top Wisconsin Republicans are downplaying the state’s record budget surplus, even as Democratic Gov. Tony Evers promises massive spending increases. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu expect to enact tax cuts and limit spending on new programs with an estimated $7 billion surplus, they said at a Wisconsin Counties Association event on Wednesday. Democrats and Republicans could find common ground on building out electric vehicle charging and increasing affordable housing. Legislative leaders from both parties said the issues were a priority, but how the Republican-controlled Legislature will address them in the budget remains to be seen.
