The Waupun Correctional Institution has been placed on lockdown. A memo obtained by WFDL news to prison staff from the prison security director states as a result of continued defiance and disruption by inmates the correctional institution is being placed on modified movement until further notice. Waupun mayor Rohn Bishop says his first reaction is “concern and safety for the people who work at the prison.” Bishop says the concerns are heightened because of a staffing shortage at the institution. Bishop says the state Corrections Department is asking the legislature for significant pay raises in an effort to be able to hire more correctional officers. As part of the lockdown, all visits and passess have been cancelled, inmates will not have access to phones and recreation will not be held.
