The president of SSM Health St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac says monitoring of COVID-19 will continue when the federal Public Heath Emergency ends May 11th. Katherine Vergos says COVID-19 prevention and precaution remains a priority as response programs transition. Vergos says its been a long three years for everyone. Vergos says staff is coming off a time of high stress , grief and challenge. Vergos says even though the public health emergency is ending, unlike influenza, COVID-19 is still not a seasonal illness. Vergos says people in Fond du Lac County are still being hospitalized with the virus. Vergos says COVID-19 vaccines will still be available free of charge until the federally purchased supply is depleted. The end of the public health emergency will mean changes to the availability of free COVID-19 testing resources, including how insurance covers testing.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
