MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin environmental regulators have settled a lawsuit alleging permit requirements they imposed on one of the state’s largest dairy operations are too harsh. Court documents show the state Department of Natural Resources’ settlement with Kewaunee County-based Kinnard Farms became effective Saturday. Kinnard Farms sued the DNR in April 2022 after the agency attached requirements to the company’s wastewater permit limitingthe size of its herd and mandating groundwater monitoring areas with nitrate pollution. Kinnard Farms argued that the business will suffer if it can’t expand its herd and groundwater monitoring is too expensive. Under the settlement, Kinnard plans to stop spreading liquid manure within four years.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
