5-31-23 wisconsin republicans introduce bill that clarifies procedures that don’t qualify as abortion

todayMay 30, 2023

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin Republicans have released legislation that would clarify medical procedures that don’t qualify as abortions. Democratic Gov. Tony Evers is almost certain to veto the measure should it pass the Republican-controlled Legislature. He has already promised to veto a different Republican-backed bill that creates exceptions for rape and incest. The new bill specifies that medical procedures intended to save a pregnant woman’s life and are not intended to kill her unborn child don’t qualify as abortions. The bill comes after doctors have complained that wording in Wisconsin’s existing abortion ban that allows abortions when the mother’s life is at stake is vague.
