A Republican authored bill would guarantee enrollment at a state university for the brightest Wisconsin high school graduates. The bill would require the UW System and technical colleges to admit students that rank in the top five percent of their class. Republican state representative Jerry O’Connor of Fond du Lac estimates that would be about 3500 students. O’Connor says UW campuses have been experiencing enrollment declines and doesn’t believe an influx of new students would be an issue.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
