MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A conservative think tank is suing Wisconsin Secretary of State Sarah Godlewski, accusing her of blocking an open records request. The group hopes to shed light on the events that led to her appointment earlier this year. Democratic Gov. Tony Evers appointed Godlewski in March after the longtime secretary of state abruptly resigned. Republicans who control the Legislature say the governor was rewarding Godlewski for dropping out of the 2022 Democratic U.S. Senate primary to clear a path for the former lieutenant governor. The Institute for Reforming Government filed the lawsuit against Godlewski on Tuesday. The group says the records request seeks communications by the previous secretary of state with Godlewski and the governor.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
