1-25-24 state of state react: republican state rep. mark born

todayJanuary 24, 2024

Madison – Representative Mark Born (R – Beaver Dam) made the following statement in reaction to the State of the State Address:

“It’s unfortunate Governor Evers used his State of the State Address to make a pitch for divisive solutions to issues facing our state, rather than highlighting the progress our state has made in the past year and finding policies we can compromise on. Instead of concentrating on the meaningful investments our state budget made in public safety, our healthcare system and reducing the tax burden on businesses and residents, the Governor chose to fixate on growing government and creating new tax-and-spend policies.

“Governor Evers could have focused on the meaningful investments we made in our state’s public safety workforce like corrections officers and district attorneys; the elimination of the personal property; or the important investments we made to ensure people throughout our state have access to high-quality healthcare. But what we actually heard was more partisan ideas for growing government, creating new government programs and taxing businesses more, along with an accusation of an unwillingness to work together. These policies are nonstarters for Republicans, who are working to responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars.

“Instead of increasing the size of government, Assembly Republicans have introduced common-sense solutions to our most persistent issues. We’ve passed legislation to reduce the regulatory burden on those trying to become licensed in our state; introduced long-term solutions to challenges facing the child care industry; supported policies to ensure families have a variety of strong educational options; and worked to return more of the surplus to the hardworking taxpayers of this state, despite Governor Evers’ repeated rejection of Republican-authored tax reductions.

“Going forward, my hope is that we can move away from the divisive rhetoric and refocus on tackling the pressing challenges facing our state.”
