5-2-24 new nutrition standards for school meals

todayMay 1, 2024

U.S. agriculture officials have announced new nutrition standards for school meals that will limit added sugars for the first time.  The Department of Agriculture issued final rules for the program that serves breakfast to more than 15 million students and lunch to nearly 30 million children every year.   Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says the new rules are a good thing.  But Mueller says there are still questions about what this means for people who prepare school meals.  “A long while ago there were recommendations from then first lady Michelle Obama, and in order to get into this programming it was very difficult to meet the mark,”  Mueller said.  “It had to do with limiting sugar and sodium.”   Limits on added sugars in foods such as cereal, yogurt and flavored milk will start in 2025.   By 2027, added sugars will be limited to no more than 10 percent of total calories per week in the school meals.  The new rule also trims sodium in kids’ meals.
