Severe weather season has shifted into high gear as a volatile weather pattern fuels repeated rounds of damaging thunderstorms and tornadoes across the nation’s midsection through May. National Weather Service meteorologist Marcia Cronce tells WFDL news the strongest tornadoes typically strike this time of year. Cronce says in the springtime the country is shifting from a winter pattern to the summer pattern, when the most drastic weather conditions tend to come together. Cronce says Wisconsin sees the most tornadoes, on average, in June. According to the Storm Prediction Center May 25 is the day with the highest number of tornado reports across the country. Between 1950 and 2020, 649 tornadoes touched down on that date, more than any other day on the calendar. Wisconsin averages between 20 and 35 tornadoes every year.
