3-18-25 chicago man convicted in fdl stabbing incident

A Chicago man has been convicted of Attempted Homicide in a stabbing incident outside a Fond du Lac apartment complex.   A Fond du Lac jury found 48 year old Lataye Smith guilty of Attempted First Degree Intentional Homicide and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon with a domestic violence enhancer.   The charges carry a maximum penalty of 80 years in prison.  Smith was convicted of attacking a 39 year old woman in January 2023 as she got into her vehicle in the parking lot of a South Main Street apartment complex.  The victim was able to escape to the  Fond du Lac Police Department after being cut multiple times, receiving lacerations to her neck and arms.  Smith was later arrested in Chicago.  A sentencing hearing will be scheduled.
