MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Three Wisconsin utilities want state regulators to let them increase electric rates by several dollars for hundreds of thousands of customers. Madison Gas and Electric wants to increase its fixed monthly rate from $10.44 to $19; We Energies wants to go from $9.13 to $16; and Wisconsin Public Service Corporation wants to jump from $10.40 to $25. The utilities have said they’ll drop hourly-use charges by a few cents, but that would not have a large effect on an overall electric bill under the proposed rates. Renewable energy advocates say the proposals are designed to recoup revenue lost through conservation. The utilities say they want all customers to pay their fair share for maintaining infrastructure. The Public Service Commission is expected to decide by the end of the year.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
