The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy says he’s hopeful a former Rosendale man will not be a danger to society as long as he stays on his medication. Keith Vandeberg was released from the Mendota Mental Health facility last Saturday nearly 17 years after he shot and killed his wife. Mark Strand was a sheriff’s lieutenant and one of the first officers on the scene of the evening of the shooting. “He (Vandeberg) called 911 to report his wife had been shot. We went out there and he clearly did not know what was going on,’ Strand told WFDL news. Strand says he’s confident the judge was convinced that after talking with mental health officials Vandeberg is not the same man he was in 1998. “He’s been getting treatment all these years and the judge is obviously in contact with the professionals and part of the deal is he is not to be released back to Fond du Lac County,” Strand said. The sons are upset and say the system failed them by releasing their father early. Strand says the sad thing is 17 years ago the Vandeberg sons lost both of their parents that night.
