12-9-14 evicting bats-new regulations

todayDecember 9, 2014

JANESVILLE, Wis. (AP) — New state rules and regulations to protect bats are restricting property owners who want the pests out of their homes.  Officials at the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources have been alarmed by bat mortality rates caused by white-nose syndrome. DNR mammal ecologist J. Paul White says the department saw a need to protect bat species because of the fungal disease.  Homeowners with bat problems are now required to install one-way exits and maintain them for about a week. This allows bats to leave but not re-enter a home.  But homeowners are prohibited from trying to get rid of roosting bats from June to mid-August, when mothers are typically taking care of their young.
