A rural Ripon man got more than he bargained for when he punched a man outside a Ripon grocery store. Turns out the man he punched was an off duty police officer. The officer freed himself from the suspect pulled out an off-duty weapon and ordered the man to the ground. He held him there until officers arrived. Witnesses say the suspect earlier became upset when store personnel refused to cash his out of state check. According to a press release the 24 year old attacked the off duty officer as the officer was walking into the store.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
